Curriculum Intent

“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”

– Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, Inc.

At Woodham Academy we want to create a curriculum that is linked to and fully embodies our whole school values: being kind, working hard, never giving up and aiming high. We want students to be inquisitive and consider the HOW, WHY and WHAT IF? We aim for our students to be resilient by setting challenging work and encouraging them not to give up when the products they are designing/testing do not work. Through the teaching of Technology, we encourage our students to become independent, creative problem-solvers and thinkers as individuals and as part of a team – making positive changes to their quality of life. Throughout the curriculum students are able to identify needs and opportunities and respond to them by developing a range of ideas and by making products within a range of areas such as Engineering, Food and Graphics.

Key Stage 3

In Key Stage 3, the curriculum is designed so that in year 7 we deliver solid foundations that are built upon each year. Students will work through a range of the technologies looking at Graphics, Food and Engineering across their three years.

Key Stage 4

In Key Stage 4, students may opt to specialise in one of the technologies as part of the options process at Year 9. Subjects currently on offer are; Graphic Design, Food & Cookery and Engineering. These are offered as vocational qualifications combining coursework and examinations.
