General Information

We expect all Woodham students to aspire to the highest standards of work and behaviour possible, showing self discipline and consideration for others. We aim to provide a safe, secure and pleasant environment for everyone, where students are supported to fulfil their potential. At Woodham Academy, we believe that all students have the right to learn in an environment free from disruption, poor behaviour, bullying and discrimination. Our rules are simple:

  • Let others learn and complete all work to the best of your ability.
  • Ensure phones are on silent and out of sight in corridors and lessons.
  • Attend school and lessons prepared and on time.
  • Respect and be polite to all people in or out of school.
  • Never drop litter.

In addition to these general rules, we have clear policies for dealing with specific types of misbehaviour including the inappropriate use of mobile phones within school, drug and alcohol misuse (including smoking), misuse of school ICT facilities and bullying.

Students have a responsibility to complete homework on time and to the best of their ability. Parents are asked to support us in ensuring that homework is completed on a regular basis. As an extension of work in the classroom, the importance of homework cannot be over estimated. It also helps students accept responsibility for their learning and establish good working habits. In years 7 and 8, homework is set online through Doddle as part of a 4 week cycle.

Homework Cycle – Years 7 and 8

Homework is set every Monday. Students are given until the next Monday to complete. There is a homework club from 3.15 – 4.30pm every evening in the Learning Centre to support students with homework.

If a student fails to complete a piece of homework, parents will receive a text message on the Wednesday of the following week to inform them of an after-school detention. In the homework detention (Wednesdays after school), students log onto Doddle in order to complete all missing homework. The detention will last 20 minutes for each piece of work missing.

All students will be able to gain access to weekly, monthly and termly rewards which include postcards home, weekly hot chocolates, cake and juice mornings monthly and reward trips to Metro Centre, Planet Leisure, Cinema and a local theme park. Students receive reward points for hard work in lessons, excellent effort, full equipment and school presentation. All reward points received will go towards a net point total giving them access to each rewards event.

The vast majority of our students behave well, and conduct themselves appropriately. We use a tracking system to monitor behaviour across all lessons. Where students do misbehave they are given a behaviour point. They are then required to attend an after-school detention on that day.

For persistent or serious breaches, there are additional sanctions that may be imposed, including referral to a behaviour room, off-site provision, and fixed term exclusions. Parents will be informed of the detention via a text message, which will also include the duration of the detention. It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure the young person gets home safely.

Lunchtime Arrangements

All students are encouraged to stay at school for lunch. Our chef, Linda Vipond, and her staff use fresh, locally sourced ingredients to prepare delicious hot meals. A sandwich bar, pasta pots and paninis are also available in both Durham and Brancepeth dining rooms. A meal deal costs £2.30. If you think your child might be eligible for free school meals, please contact us. The dining rooms operate on a cashless system using ParentPay. Any student who wishes to leave site at lunchtime is required to obtain a lunch pass and be supervised at home by their parents during this period.
