Modern Foreign Languages – French

Curriculum Intent

“The limits of my language are the limits of my world.”

 – Ludwig Wittgenstein

We want to instil a love of languages among our students and broaden their horizons to allow them to travel, study and work in a variety of careers all over the world. Learning a foreign language enables us to break free of insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. Our MFL curriculum aims to foster students’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world, as well as being challenging and inclusive.

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3, our aim is to widen students’ awareness and encourage them to step beyond familiar cultural boundaries and develop new ways of seeing the world. The curriculum enables students to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4, students should develop a competency that is both broad and deep in the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing based on a sound foundation of core grammar, vocabulary and phonics. They should also be able to understand and communicate personal and factual information that goes beyond their immediate needs and interests, developing and justifying points of view in speech and writing, with increased spontaneity, independence and accuracy.
